Sugaring vs. Waxing: Everything You Need to Know:Â
It's impossible to keep up with the hair removal world when a new technique is popping up every other day. However, waxing and sugaring are hair removal techniques that have been around since the beginning of time. Researchers say that sugar wax has been documented as early as ancient Egypt.Â
Waxing and sugaring are often grouped because both techniques lift hair from the root of the hair follicle and have a longer effect on the skin than shaving. But truth be told, they're two very different techniques. With waxing, a strip is used to remove the hair in the opposite direction of the growth pattern. Because of this, the results can differ greatly. Sugaring works the opposite way, sugaring is pulled in the natural direction of the hair growth.Â
If you’re thinking about making the switch from waxing to sugaring I highly recommend it —or if you’re trying hair removal for the first time, here’s what you need to know about sugaring. Sugaring is a hair removal technique that uses an all-natural paste & only 3 ingredients. lemon, sugar, and water. That’s it! There are no additives or strips involved, making it a natural alternative and more environmentally conscious alternative to traditional wax. Sugaring has been used for centuries for hair removal, and it has roots in ancient Egyptian and Middle Eastern cultures.
✨Here is a list of pros for sugaring hair removal.
✨100%: Organic, vegan, non-toxic, biodegradable, no preservatives.
✨Over time (and with consistent upkeep), you'll notice a reduction of hair growth.
✨Helps reduce the risk of ingrown hairs.
✨Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive
✨The mixture is water-soluble, so it washes off with water if any residue is left behind
I had to try this method myself and find out if it was true. Having many years of speed waxing under my belt and having Brazilians done on myself I decided to get certified as a sugar specialist in August of 2018. I psyched myself up to try this alternative to waxing that is supposedly far less painful. First, we mold the ball of sugar paste in our hands to warm it and make it easier to work with. Then we smooth the sugar on the skin, against the hair growth. To remove, we then flick the hand back, going with the growth of the hair, pulling up hairs with the paste. I have to say, it was not that bad and I was a little hesitant and couldn’t believe that it was A LOT less painful than waxing. We use the same ball of sugar paste throughout the treatment—molding the paste in our hands repeatedly between applications—repeating this process until each area is clean and smooth as a baby's bottom. I was pleasantly surprised by the results and had less ingrown hairs and my hair grew back A LOT slower. I was hooked.Â
Overall, Sugaring is a gentler experience than traditional waxing.
